In this talk Sherry Turkle does an amazing job tackling the issues surrounding our love for and attachment to technology.
Turkle is a professor in the Program in Science, Technology and Society at MIT and the founder and director of the MIT Initiative on Technology and Self.

I am guilty of all the things she describes, I love my screens and often feel that they cause me to avoide reflection. In this talk she says “you end up feeling isolated if you don’t cultivate the capacity to feel solitude…” I think the “capacity to feel solitude” is something so incredibly valuable…

This is a great project by Joong Han Lee…He is a self-proclaimed “global nomad. Born and raised in Seoul, he then moved to the US. After living in the Pacific Northwest, he studied Interactive Product Design at Otis College of Art and Design, in Los Angeles, California. He now resides in the Netherlands, where he recently graduated from the Masters in Contextual Design at the Design Academy Eindhoven in 2011.”

December 3, 2011 //

For $49, this is SO wish-listed! “This portable charger minimizes cable clutter and maximizes style by placing multiple charging outlets on a single bar that rolls up into a slip-proof, polyurethane mat. You can refuel up to 4 devices simultaneously while occupying just a single wall outlet.”

August 27, 2011 //

I love this product and I love Jane’s mission. She is from Ireland and was studying product design at RCA London when she had an idea: “I don’t want to buy new stuff all the time. I want to hack the stuff I already have so it works better for me.”

In Jane’s words: This is “sugru and is a little bit brilliant. You should really watch the video.”

Kevin Slavin on how algorithms shape our world

July 28, 2011 //

It is an interesting world we are creating…this TED talk by Kevin Slavin argues that “we’re living in a world designed for — and increasingly controlled by — algorithms. In this riveting talk from TEDGlobal, he shows how these complex computer programs determine: espionage tactics, stock prices, movie scripts, and architecture. And he warns that we are writing code we can’t understand, with implications we can’t control.”
